The same self-developed fashion women's fabric, which previously had a lifecycle of over a month, is now lasting two to three months, making it more profitable. "The reason this change has not happened before is because our fabrics have been protected by copyright from the very beginning of the design process," said the head of Unisplendour, a fabric developer who has doubled the lifespan of its products. The company also emphasizes the importance of protecting innovation. In recent years, with a strong focus on fabric innovation and increased R&D efforts, the company has launched over 30 new floral patterns every month. As a result, it has become a top seller in the textile market and is the preferred choice for leading women’s brands. This has helped Unisplendour maintain a strong competitive edge in the industry.
However, since March of this year, when the company introduced a new product called “Li Gui,†it realized that merely innovating the fabric was not enough. It also needed to extend the lifecycle of these innovative fabrics, making it the core of their business strategy. As a result, Unisplendour has become highly proactive in registering pattern copyrights. From the initial design stages, the vice president personally oversees the registration process. "For us, pattern copyright registration has become a crucial part of product innovation, and the cost is now included in our necessary financial expenses," said Vice President Wang Guochuan.
In the first half of this year, the company saw a 20% increase in sales. A significant portion of this growth came from the extended lifecycle of new products, which was more than double the previous rate. Additionally, the reduction in imitated fabrics has helped stabilize market prices and significantly lowered development costs. As the front line of fashion clothing, fabric innovation is key to fast growth. The length of the seasonal fabric lifecycle and market price stability are directly linked to the profitability of fabric developers.
"We are not afraid of not having new products; we are afraid of new products being quickly imitated," lamented Chen Yuming, a dyeing and printing operator in the Binhai Industrial Zone. He recalled how, in the past, the cycle of developing and selling new products felt like "ten years of effort on stage, one minute on stage" due to rampant imitation.
With the establishment of the China Textile City Copyright Registration Office two years ago, pattern copyright protection has increasingly become an "umbrella" for self-innovative textile enterprises and business operators. To date, more than 4,600 pattern copyrights have been registered. Recently, the scope of pattern copyright registration in the Textile City has expanded from only accepting works from the textile market to including those from manufacturing enterprises. This expansion indicates that the "umbrella" will continue to grow in the future, offering greater protection and support for innovation in the textile industry.
