Tencel's application extends to carpets

On August 25th, during the China International Home Textiles and Accessories Fair in Shanghai, the Austrian Lenzing Group held a press conference to announce a groundbreaking development: the successful expansion of Tencel® fiber applications into the carpet industry. This marks a significant shift in how natural cellulose fibers are used in home furnishings. For years, the production of carpets has relied on thick and long fibers, making it challenging to use short natural cellulose fibers like those found in traditional wood pulp. However, Lenzing has now introduced a specially processed TENCEL® fiber tailored for the carpet sector. This innovation allows natural cellulose to meet the technical demands of carpet manufacturing while delivering superior performance. The resulting TENCEL®-based carpets offer enhanced comfort, thanks to their ability to regulate indoor temperature and humidity, creating a more pleasant living environment. Moreover, TENCEL® carpets excel in moisture control, which helps prevent mold growth—especially beneficial in humid climates. Compared to wool carpets, TENCEL® offers an added advantage: it is naturally resistant to mites due to the absence of proteins that attract them. Another key benefit is TENCEL®'s natural moisture content, which reaches up to 13%, far higher than the mere 1% found in synthetic fibers. This feature effectively reduces static electricity, a crucial factor for home carpets. Additionally, TENCEL® can be blended with various fibers to achieve vibrant, long-lasting colors and a smooth texture, giving carpets a soft, silky feel that enhances both aesthetics and comfort. BestWool, a Dutch specialist in wool carpets, was among the first to successfully develop and commercialize Tencel®-based carpets. Yvar Monasch, the company’s Managing Director, expressed strong confidence in the potential of Tencel®-wool blends. He noted, “Tencel® is widely used because of its high strength and versatility—it can serve as carpet pile, tufting, or even padding.” He also emphasized that Tencel®’s eco-friendly nature and moisture-regulating properties provide additional value to wool-based products, making them more sustainable and comfortable for consumers. With this new application, Tencel® is not only redefining the possibilities of natural fibers but also setting a new standard for comfort, sustainability, and performance in the home textile market.
