On August 25th, during the China International Home Textiles and Accessories Fair in Shanghai, the Austrian Lenzing Group held a press event to announce a major breakthrough: the successful expansion of Tencel® fibers into the carpet industry. This development marks a significant shift in how natural cellulose fibers are being used in home furnishings.
Traditionally, carpets have been made from thick, long fibers that can withstand heavy use and maintain durability. Natural cellulose fibers, such as those found in Tencel®, were previously considered unsuitable for this purpose due to their shorter length. However, Lenzing has now introduced a specially processed Tencel® fiber designed specifically for the carpet market. This innovation allows natural cellulose to meet the technical demands of carpet manufacturing while offering additional benefits.
Tencel®-based carpets provide superior temperature and humidity regulation, enhancing indoor comfort. Their ability to manage moisture helps prevent mold growth, making them an ideal choice for homes in humid climates. Additionally, unlike wool, which contains proteins that attract dust mites, Tencel® carpets are naturally resistant to mites, improving indoor air quality and reducing allergens.
One of the key advantages of Tencel® is its natural moisture content—up to 13%, compared to just 1% in synthetic fibers. This helps reduce static electricity, a common issue in home carpets, especially in dry environments. The fiber also blends well with other materials, allowing for vibrant, long-lasting colors and a smooth texture. As a result, Tencel® carpets feel soft, light, and luxurious underfoot.
BestWool, a Dutch specialist in wool carpets, was among the first to successfully develop and bring Tencel®-blended carpets to market. Yvar Monasch, the company’s Managing Director, expressed strong confidence in the potential of Tencel®-wool combinations. He noted that Tencel® offers high strength and versatility, making it suitable not only for carpet pile but also for tufting and padding. He also emphasized that Tencel®’s eco-friendly nature and moisture control properties add significant value to traditional wool carpets, making them more sustainable and comfortable for modern homes.
