India: Supply of genetically modified cottonseeds is in short supply or affected

According to recent foreign reports, India has seen a significant rise in the use of genetically modified (GM) cotton varieties over the past few years, which has contributed to a steady increase in cotton production. However, the situation is now changing due to a sharp rise in the cost of cottonseed production—approximately 30 to 40% in recent times. Despite this surge in costs, the market price for cottonseed has not kept pace, creating financial strain on farmers and seed producers alike. Shanhu Shantharam, executive director of the Indian Agricultural Biotechnology Association, warns that the 2011/12 season could see a reduction in GM cotton seed production by about 2.25 million kilograms. He further predicts that demand for cottonseed in the 2012/13 season will reach as high as 18 million kilograms. Yet, domestic seed companies are only able to produce around 15.75 million kilograms annually. This growing gap between supply and demand raises concerns about potential shortages in cottonseed availability. If this trend continues, it could lead to a decline in cotton yields, affecting both farmers and the broader textile industry. The situation highlights the need for increased investment in local seed production and more sustainable agricultural policies to ensure long-term stability in the cotton sector. With rising input costs and limited supply, India’s cotton industry may face significant challenges in the coming years unless proactive measures are taken.
