Oriental Net News, February 22: As reported by the *Oriental Morning Post*, Shen City has experienced a gradual rise in temperatures recently, prompting retailers to place spring clothing in the most visible spots in shopping malls. However, upon checking the prices, it's clear that this year’s spring wear has seen a significant price hike. For example, a thin windbreaker or jacket from the same brand now costs more than last year’s wool or down coats.
According to industry sources, the primary reason for the price increase is the rising cost of cotton. "The overall production cost has gone up," one clothing supplier explained. This trend is evident across major department stores like Parkson, Pacific, Meilong Town Isetan, and Hisamitsu, where spring collections dominate the shelves. Shirts, dresses, blouses, and knits are now taking up over half of the counters.
At brands like VERO MODA, OU Shili, and E-LAND, long-sleeved unisex shirts typically range between 300 and 500 yuan, while windbreakers and jackets often exceed 1,000 yuan. At Pacific Department Store, some high-end women’s brands have spring windbreakers priced between 3,000 and 4,000 yuan, with last season’s winter coats still costing around 3,300 yuan.
One salesperson noted, “Last year, the money you needed for a coat or down jacket this year can only buy a windbreaker.†She added that price hikes this season are widespread, with some items doubling in cost compared to last year.
Industry experts suggest that the increase is largely due to rising cotton prices. Mr. Xiao, a clothing wholesaler, said, “Cotton prices have been climbing since last year, and since garments are usually produced in advance, this year’s spring clothes naturally became more expensive.†He also pointed out that labor costs have increased, adding to the pressure on pricing.
Despite the higher prices, many shoppers are opting for discounted winter clothes instead. A customer shopping for discounted items said, “There are a lot of autumn and spring styles from last year that are still fashionable but at half price. It’s better to wait for spring discounts.â€
To save money, some consumers are turning to custom-made clothing. The South Bund textile market remains busy, with many customers comparing fabrics and designs. “More young people and even foreigners are coming in,†said a store owner. Customization options are expanding beyond traditional styles, with customers requesting specific designs based on their preferences.
Prices for custom-made items vary, with shirts starting at over 100 yuan, small suits and jackets around 300 yuan, and cashmere coats ranging from 500 to 600 yuan. Most orders take about a week to complete, making it a popular choice for those looking for unique, tailored pieces.
